Passionate Love

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to live lives of passion.  Jesus himself tells us that the greatest thing we can do is to love God with all our hearts, all our souls, all our strength. In other words, hold nothing back when you love God. To love with passion. This is the kind of love we need to move towards during our life. We need to be people who are utterly passionate about our love for God and for one another. We need to burn with one desire - the desire to love. Everything else in our lives should serve that one desire.

It seems that one of our greatest dangers as Christians is mediocrity. Many of us have settled for normal, ordinary lives that have no passion for God or for others mixed in with our lives. We are accused of being boring, and often we must admit that we are guilty of making our religion a boring one.

When people on the outside look at us, they often see that we are anything but passionate about the way of life we have chosen.

We have to walk the path of prayer and awareness if we hope to develop a passionate love for God and others.  "Prayer is attention to God's coming into our life, a recognition of the grace of the present hour, and unfailing vigilance for the Lord's calling. It is the most personal and most personalizing event in human life. Nothing brings people closer together in
oneness, brotherhood and solidarity than to call the one God 'Our Father". (Bernard Haring)

Through daily and persistent prayer, we allow God to shape us into people of love and compassion.  May we all have the courage to surrender ourselves into the loving hands of God.      Peace, Fr. John.
