Still Being Persecuted

In different parts of our world, Christians are still suffering for holding on to their beliefs. Many still die for their faith in Jesus Christ. In our own cultures, we don't hear of people suffering because they are Christians. No one physically attacks another person in our country just because that person professes to be a Christian. The persecution that is taking place in our country is rather one of values. Christian values are often seen as old fashioned, out-of-date, not with it. And we are not physically struck for our beliefs; no, instead of being attacked, we are mocked. We are treated as dumb and naïve children. We are told we are stupid and silly for believing what we believe, especially when it comes to the area of life and its dignity.

We are being attacked on all sides. What is our response? The answer is simple, yet difficult. We can not allow our society to tell us what we must believe. Just because something is legally all right, does not mean that it is morally all right. We can no longer point to the law to tell us that something is right. Our faith is the only place where we can be assured of finding God's truth. And so we must delve further into our faith and its teachings.

As followers of Christ, we must be prepared to defend the truths that Jesus came to show us. May you and I always be faithful to the Holy Spirit of the truth. May we filter out the illusions that come our way and allow the truth to completely direct our thoughts and our lives.

 Peace,  Father John

LITURGY

Ascension – May 12
The meaning of this feast is that Jesus has gone to glory with the Father
outside of time and space.  He intercedes  for us and has sent us another
advocate, the Holy Spirit.  Meanwhile, we await Jesus’ return in glory.

Our use of incense today symbolizes the cloud which received Jesus as
He went up from the sight of the disciples.  Our prayers also go up with joy
to Jesus our Redeemer.

Pentecost – May 19
Parishioners are encouraged to wear red that day to create a living environment of the fire of the
Holy Spirit.

Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Church as Jesus promised.  The disciples, gathered in their upper room, experience the presence of the Spirit in such a profound way that it drives them out into the world to proclaim and preach the gospel with a courage unknown before. St. John’s description of the gift of the Spirit occurs on the first day of the Resurrection, primarily for the forgiveness of sin, rather than 50 days later as in St. Luke’s account in the Acts of the Apostles.  St. Paul explains how the gifts of the Spirit diffuse throughout the community.  Pentecost is a continuing creative event.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful
And Kindle in them the fire of your love.

PRO-LIFE NEWS

“IT’S WISE TO WAIT” PROVINCIAL YOUTH CHASTITY CONFERENCE – sponsored  by Regina Pro-Life association, May 31 & June 1 at Riffel High School.  Guest speaker is Bev Hadland, author and international lecturer.  Through humour and heartwarming illustrations, she has effectively educated over 2 million teens on God’s demands for abstinence, and how to live a chaste lifestyle until marriage.  All young adults aged 13 to 20 are encouraged to attend!  Registration forms are available at the church office or by calling the Pro-Life Committee Chair-person, Cheri MacFarlane at 522-1985.  Our Pro-Life Committee will be paying all costs for anyone interested in attending.  Registration deadline is May 15th.
