Made for Love

We all need meaningful human relationships. It's in our bones. It's the way we were made. That's because we're made in the image and likeness of God, and God is not a solitary God, but is actually a community of Persons. That's what we celebrate today. The God who is One, but at the same time is a community of loving Persons.

The Trinity is first and foremost a way of expressing the ever-flowing love that mysteriously takes place within the reality of God. The Trinity is not an idea, but rather the very foundation of our daily living and breathing and loving. The second reading chosen for today's feast urges us with these words: "...put things in order -- agree with one another, live in peace and the God of love and peace will be with you". These words reflect the kind of life we need to live if we are to be images in our world of who the Trinity is.

On a very practical level, this means that when we are in true harmony with others, we will experience the God who is the perfect community of peace. Paul says, "Live in peace and the God of love and peace will be with you." This puts a serious obligation on us to remove obstacles that stand in the way of understanding other people. Our judgements, our preconceptions, our prejudices -- all of these and more, prevent us from living in peace with others. They put distance between others and ourselves.

In our own lives, as we try to move into true harmony with others, at the same time we are moving into true harmony with the God who is the God of peace and fellowship. May this feast of the Trinity reaffirm for all of us the grace that comes from true love of one another.

 Peace,  Father John
