An Open Community
Many of us would rather not think about the sometimes painful necessity of carrying out a drastic inner renewal. And yet we know the truth of the matter is that there are many times in our lives when we need to detach ourselves from those things in our lives, which are blocking a deeper relationship to God. We easily become attached to so many things which slow us down on our spiritual journeys.

To follow Jesus with our whole selves, we really have no choice. If we fail at the work of inner renewal, we fail at the work of living. If we are to be faithful to our calling as the Lord's disciples, our overriding task is to put aside whatever stands between ourselves and the Lord. The biggest single obstacle to friendship with the Lord consists in the attachments that we cling to. "Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me." This is the call of Jesus, urging us not to hold anything back in our relationship with him.

The journey of our spiritual lives is a journey where we are asked to let go of more and more. We cannot cling to things and people and, at the same time, cling to God. Every single attachment that we have is like a rope tying us down and preventing us from freely moving about. Our ability to love all of God's creation, including all men and women, is restricted by a clinging to any one person or thing. The person who is truly free and loving is not bound by anything except God. As we move through life, that should be our goal -- to become as free as the eagle -- with the ability and the power to love all with the same kind of love that God has for everything and everyone.

Peace,   Fr. John

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE REPORT

The weather was far from the greatest, but thanks to all the golfers, sponsors, donors of prizes and volunteers, the 3rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Emerald Park Golf & Country Club was again a success.  The profit realized was $7,347.66.  Special thanks go to Holy Cross parishioners in business and other organizations who supported this event through $100 and $200 sponsorships:

Knights of Columbus,  Msgr. Gerein Council
Don Jackson, 1 Stop Vacuum Centre
Brad Holmes, Al’s Landscaping
Holy Cross Catholic Women’s League
Kelly Murphy, Remedial Massage Therapist
Larry LeBlanc, QC
George White, Sherwood Credit Union
Bevan Sthamann, Sthamann Homes
Chris Nicholson, The Winroc Corporation

In addition there were many parishioners who obtained or donated some great prizes:

Steve Yang, Clean Brite Canada
Darcy Butchko, Co-operators
Dennis Gallant, Domino’s Pizza
Dave Smith, Cucorp Financial Services
Harvey Kennedy, Express-It Advertising Specialties
Jim Kambeitz, ICR Koyl
Neil Garchinski, Inter Pacific Auto Glass
Stella Swan, M & M Meat Shops
John & Cheryl Yaehne, National Cartage
David Klymchuk, The Wireless Age
Herb & Scarlet Wheaton, Wheaton Chev Olds

We list all these people and encourage you to consider them when you are in need of goods or services they provide.  As Holy Cross parishioners, we would like to support those who support Holy Cross.

There were many parishioners who made monetary donations: George Ebenal, Debbie Howell, Felix & Jane Kryzanowski, Pat Most, Bill Shewchuk, Greg Wensel and Gerard Woynarski.

Without the volunteer workers, it would be impossible to put on an event such as this to work the pitching, putting and driving range contests, monitor the holes-in-one, set up signage and help with prizes, staff the registration desk and any other jobs needed doing.  We have to thank especially Aaron & Nicole Liska who spent the whole day on the job, and Bruce & Cecilia Zylak-Hill, as well as Christian Service Volunteers from Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School.

The Golf Committee, as one member observed, “ . . . is the best committee I’ve ever worked on.”  They are all “doers.”  Congratulations and thanks to them all:

Neil Garchinski
Tony & Debbie Howell
Cal  & Joyce Murphy
Gilbert & Doreen Nicolay
James Wahl
Reg Hinz
Harvey Kennedy
Dave Nichols
Harry Selinger
Gerald Workman
Brad Holmes
Bob & Kathy Liska
Chris Nicholson
Warren Smith

And last of all, you, the golfers, who braved wind, a little sleet, a little more rain and a few dry patches:  We hope you all had an enjoyable time and thank you for taking part in this fundraiser.  We hope to see you again at the 4th annual in June 2003.

Thank you to all parishioners who have supported our fundraising efforts this year.  It is an important part of our efforts to reach a balanced budget for Holy Cross.

Vacation and Church Go Together

  • You’ll be a part of a city-wide program to decrease crime in Regina.

What you need to do to be involved is to keep your eyes and ears open, and report suspicious activities.  In return, the coordinator can provide you with information on a weekly basis of the crime statistics in your area, as well as provide you with crime prevention tips.

If you are interested in participating, or finding more about Neighbourhood Watch, call or e-mail:

Canada Day Prayer Celebration

Opening Prayer:

Eternal God, we thank you for this great nation of Canada.
For it's commitment to justice and freedom.
We ask You to grant wisdom to our leaders, and integrity to our citizens.
When we see our flag, may it move our hearts to re-commit to the Gospel values in our lives.

Opening Song:  See list below.

First Reading:  Isaiah 56:1, 6-7

Responsorial Psalm:  Psalm 84

Gospel:  Matthew 5:1-12

Pause for personal reflection.

Reflection:  This may be done in one large group or have people break into smaller groups.  Try to select a group leader who will encourage active listening and participation by all members.

1. What are some of the gifts you have been blessed with?
2. Name some freedoms you enjoy in your life and/or in our Country.
3. Who witnesses God to you?
4. Name a Canadian hero to you and why?
5. Which Beatitude challenges you the most and how can this challenge be used to make Canada a better place to call home?

Prayers of the Faithful:
 Response:  Lord, hear our Prayer.

1. For our Country, that it may be a blessing to  the world,
 We pray to the Lord.

2. For World Youth Day being hosted in our country  this July, that we prepare for this celebration with  faith, hope and love,
 We pray to the Lord.

3. For those people who don't live in freedom,  justice and dignity and for world peace,
 We pray to the Lord.

4. That each one of us may live the Beatitudes each  day, for our reward will be great in Heaven,
 We pray to the Lord.

5. For any personal intentions people would like to  add at this time . . . (pause) . . .
 We pray to the Lord.

Our Father:  Pray together asking that we may grow in love, unity and freedom.

Greeting of Peace:  Offer each other a sign of peace.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, sustain us as we strive toward renewed freedoms,  a united country and respect for all
Canadians regardless of culture, color or religion.  Let us work together to preserve and conserve our natural resources for the good of all.
Keep us from violence, discord, pride and arrogance and guide us along the path of justice.
We ask this in Your name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Summer Schedule

This summer our Mass times will remain the same as during the year – Sat. 5 p.m.,  Sun. 9 and 11 a.m.

Reminder to all Altar Servers and Adult Ministers: If you are unable to serve at your scheduled time, please arrange for a replacement.

Musicians are not scheduled for the Masses.  We are counting on volunteers to come forward to lead the community in song.

At any Mass, if you see a shortage of ministers, please do not hesitate to fill in.  The beauty of our liturgy depends on a full complement of ministers at each Mass.
