Self-Esteem: Too Much or Not Enough?

As with most things that are common, it is not easy to define what we mean by self-esteem. Probably the simplest definition is "satisfaction with oneself". The problem with self-esteem comes when some people think that self-esteem or the lack of it is responsible for everything good or everything bad. One group states that, "Low Self-Esteem is the underlying cause of most cases involving: fear, anxiety, anger, panic attacks, dependence and lack of assertiveness, depression, eating disorders, domestic violence, etc. Because of this notion that self-esteem is at the root of most human problems, there has arisen what I would call a negative form of self-esteem.

This is self-esteem that has gotten out of hand. In today's Gospel, the Pharisee is suffering from this negative kind of self-esteem. He knows he is good, but he uses his goodness to put the publican down. He is disdainful and critical of this other person and sees himself as vastly superior to him.

A positive effect of genuine self-esteem is that it does not lead to comparisons with others. If I have a positive sense of myself based on the fact that I am created in the image and likeness of God, then I will also respect this image of God that I see in other people. I will be thankful for all of the many gifts that God has given through so many different people. As we try to encourage the growth of self-esteem in our children or our employees or students, let us remember that all such encouragement must be based on the truth. Flattery or false praise will only create a false or negative self-esteem. Truth is still the best and most direct path to creating a right relationship with God, neighbour and self.

 Peace,  Father John

CWL NEWS – General Meeting: Tues., Nov. 6 beginning with Rosary at 6:45 (for members that have died over the summer – Martha Ebenal & Nellie Jelinski) Mass 7:00 p.m. Meeting to follow.

FINANCE COUNCIL REPORT – In our bulletin for Oct. 13/14,2001 weekend we indicated a net loss of $22,000 after 9 months ended Sept. 30, 2001.  The main reason for this loss is the drop in the Sunday Collection income; it is about $15,000 less than budgeted.  It would be greatly appreciated if everyone made just a little extra effort to increase their Sunday Contributions in order that Holy Cross Parish will end up with a balanced budget at year-end Dec. 31, 2001 instead of a loss. Thank you.

FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION – Nov. 2 after   the 8 a.m. Mass until Benediction at  4:00 p.m.  A sign-up sheet is posted at  the Douglas Ave. Entrance.

FOWL SUPPER – The Fowl Supper sold out completely last weekend.  Thanks to all of you who donated your services and food items.  We look forward to seeing many of you there reaping the benefits of your hard work and generosity.

ALL SAINTS/ALL SOULS

 Nov. 1 Mass  7:00 p.m.
 Nov. 2 Mass 8:00 a.m.
The twin celebrations of All Saints (Nov. 1) and All Souls (Nov. 2) remind us that “death is not the end nor does it break the bonds forged in life.” (Order of Christian Funerals)

In our prayer “we ask the help of the saints and we pray for those who have died but have yet to enter fully into the joys of heaven.  We believe in the Communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified and the blessed in heaven all together forming one church in which the merciful love of God and the Saints is always attentive to our prayer.“ (Pope Paul IV)

Book of Remembrance: Parishioners are invited to write the names of their loved ones who have died in our Book of Remembrance.  Pages of the book are available at both entrances.  The book will have a place of honour at our All Souls Celebration and throughout the month of November.

MEMORIAL CELEBRATION  - On Wed., Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. we will have a special memorial of all those who have died in the past year.  Invitations have been sent to families of those whose funerals were held here at Holy Cross.  Anyone else who has lost a family member or special loved one since last October is invited to contact the office.  You may bring a picture of your loved one if your wish and there will be an opportunity to light a candle in their memory.  Please call the office by Nov. 5 to confirm your attendance and to assist us in planning for this evening.  Refreshments will be served after the celebration.

COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE
" … and there is no limit to the blessings which God can send you - God will make sure that you will always have all you need for yourselves in every possible circumstance ... " (2 Corinthians 9: 8).  The call of the Commitment to the Future is a call for growth in faith - to believe in the promise extended by God through the words of Scripture.  Respond in faith, knowing and trusting that God recognizes your sacrificial willingness to live the message of the Gospel.  Commit to the Future!

This weekend has been designated as Commitment Sunday,  All parishioners are encouraged to reply to the appeal this week, if
you have not already done so.  Return the pledge card you received in the mail or complete a pledge form envelope available at the church.  Together the people of the Archdiocese will be able to provide for the needs outlined in the Archbishop’s Appeal for 2001.

Thank you to the phone volunteers from our parish who are making contacts on behalf of the Appeal.

Liturgy News

Hymns are important to Liturgy
Just as readers and proclaimers, greeters and ushers are aware that each part of the liturgy should receive its full value and not be rushed or over-lapped, so too music ministers and the assembly.

All of us, music ministers and the assembly, should be sensitive to the fact that a hymn used at Mass should be sung in its entirety.  It shouldn’t be cut short at two verses just because the presider has arrived at his place and the choir and people might be anxious that they shouldn’t hold him up.  If a hymn has many verses, it may be saved for a time when many verses would be appropriate, like at Communion, perhaps.  It is appropriate to sing a hymn of three or four verses in its entirety, making in a prayer in itself.  In fact, a prayer prayed twice over, because it is sung.

Unlike the Creed or the General Intercessions, during which ministers should not be walking to get to the next function, hymns often require movement, because they are accompaniment for a procession – Opening,
Communion, Recessional.

Vision Quest 2001 Conference will be held at Miller High School Nov. 2-3.  Archbishop Mallon has asked all priests of the diocese to attend the conference and to be present for the closing Mass at 4 p.m. Saturday.  Parishes are asked to either cancel their Saturday evening Mass on Nov. 3 or hold a Lay Presided Service.  We will have a Lay Presided Service at our usual Saturday 5:00 p.m. time.

Participation in the Sunday Eucharist is the privilege of all members of the church.  When this is not possible due to the necessary absence of the priest communities are still urged to come together to give God praise and thanks, to hear and respond to the Word of God and share Christ’s Sacrament.  The difference between a Lay Presided Service and a celebration of the Eucharist, or  Mass, is that there is no Eucharistic prayer which includes the consecration of the bread and wine.  Only a priest can do this.  The communion received at a Lay Presided Service has been consecrated at a previous Celebration of the Eucharist.  The gathering of the people, led by a designated Lay Minister will inspire the faithful in their daily life and enkindle in them the desire to celebrate the Eucharist once again.

OCTOBER PASTORAL COUNCIL REPORT

Parish council has conducted a series of “visioning” sessions over the course of our last four council meetings with the goal of making council more exemplary and emissary leaders within our church.  October was the final session in the series and the intent is that you will notice a difference in your council.  Thanks to Jane for her guidance in this process.

As most of you have now read, the Archdiocese is having a “Vision Quest”.  This is a process of consultation and dialogue throughout the Archdiocese to discern how together we can effectively provide the essential elements to sustain and animate vibrant faith communities in southern Saskatchewan.  The initial meetings  will be held Nov. 2-3. Our parish representative is Sean Kukura.

The Archdiocesan Appeal is progressing well.  With some refinements over last year’s process we require less effort on our behalf and will achieve the same successful outcome.  Thanks to all of those involved in the appeal.

A new addition to our congregation will be the “Vocation Cross”.  Four crosses will be made and blessed at the Cathedral on Dec. 2 when the World Youth Day Cross comes to Regina.  Parishioners will be asked to sign up and take a cross home for one week and pray for the assigned intention (ie. World Youth Day 2002, North American Congress on Vocations, etc.).  Please watch  the bulletin for more information.

Peace and Blessings, Sean Kukura
